We advised our users to install Carbon Black, a software programme that monitors computers for malicious activity.  

Any laptop or desktop computer (PC or Mac) that is currently connected to Wi-Fi/Eduroam or the UIS VPN needs to have this software installed until further notice.

Steps for Installing on a Mac

  1. Download the file “confer_installer_mac-3.8.0.58.dmg” by CLICKING HERE..

  2. Locate the downloaded file in your Downloads folder and double click it. On the resulting pop-up, double-click “CBCloud Install.pkg

  1. Click Allow & OK on the pop-up and run through the Wizard to install.

  1. When prompted, type or paste the following installation key into the box: F9KP33DNW301Q!BX3OK

  1. On the System Extension Blocked pop-up, click Open System Settings. This should open macOS System Settings at the Privacy & Security tab:

  1. Scroll down the Privacy & Security tab until you see the text “System software from application 'VMWare CBCloud' was blocked from loading.” and click the Allow button next to it to allow the system extension to run.

  1. Another pop-up saying “VMWare Carbon Black Cloud Sensor would like to filter network content” should also appear. Click Allow to allow the network extension to run.

  1. Back to the Privacy & Security tab; click Full Disk Access, then find “com.vmware.carbonblack.cloud.se-agent.extension” in the list, and turn on the blue toggle to grant Full Disk Access to the system extension:

(if you are running an older macOS version you may see a small padlock icon in the Security & Privacy pane: click this, enter your macOS password, then tick the relevant box):

  1. Carbon Black Cloud Sensor is now installed. A folder called “VMware Carbon Black Cloud” will appear in your Applications list, but you will not get a user interface if try to run these programs. DO NOT DELETE THIS FOLDER. If you wish to verify the agent is running you can open Activity Monitor and search for the agent’s process: com.vmware.carbonblack.cloud.ui

Removal

Mass removal of all Carbon Black installations will be carried out remotely by the university’s security contractor once their investigations are complete. Please keep the software installed until then.
