How to find a Serial Number/Service Tag or Computer Name (also known as Hostname or UMD Number)

  • CSCS uses the Serial Number to manage your computer or the Computer Name (also known as the Hostname or UMD Number) to connect to it remotely.

  • This article describes how to quickly find this information.

How to find the Serial Number or Service Tag:

On Windows laptops or desktop PCs

  • For a Dell laptops or desktop PCs, there is usually a sticker on the case (on the underside on a laptop) which shows the Service Tag information, see below in red.

On macOS laptops or desktop PCs

  • For Apple Mac’s, the serial number should be printed on the bottom of the device, see below in red.

  • Otherwise from the Apple menu in the corner of your screen image-20250203-153448.png choose About This Mac, then serial number should be displayed in the details, see below in red.

If you have a laptop or desktop PC that is not Dell or Apple, you will need to check the manufacturer’s website of where to find the serial number.

 

How to find the Computer Name (also known as Hostname and/or UMD Number)

On UMD Windows laptops or desktop PCs

  • On UMD devices, click on the Start button and then start typing "company" into the search and when it is listed, click on the Company Portal application, see below in red.

  • Once it loads, it will show the Computer Name, also known as the UMD Number, see below in red.

On Non-UMD Windows laptops or desktop PCs

  • For non-UMD devices, click on the Start button and then click on the Settings button, see below in red.

  • Alternatively, you can click on the Start button and then start typing "settings" into the search and when it is listed, click on the Settings application, see below in red.

  • When the Settings application loads, it loads on the Home screen which will show you the computer name in the centre of the screen, see below.

  • Alternatively, click on System which is usually the first item on the left side of the window, which will show you the computer name in the centre of the screen, see below in red.

On older versions of non-UMD Windows laptops or desktop PCs

  • For non-UMD devices running an older version of the Windows operating system, click on the Start button and then start typing "cmd" into the search and when it is listed, click on the Command Prompt application, see below in red.

  • When the Command Prompt application loads, type the word: hostname

  • Then press the Enter key, which will display the computer name (also known as hostname) see below in red.

On UMD macOS laptops or desktop PCs

 

On Non-UMD macOS laptops or desktop PCs

  • For non-UMD devices, click on the the Apple Logo 

     in the top left corner of the screen then click on More Info, see below in red.

  • Under Name, you will see what the computer name is, see below in red.
