Now that you have your new device, below is a guide on how to get yourself set up.
Please be aware, that software, applications etc.. install in the background, so it’s useful to keep your device connected to the Internet as much as possible, to allow the set up to complete fully.
1. Initial set up
Unbox your device and switch it on and you will be asked to make the following selections:
Choose English (UK) Language.
Choose United Kingdom Regional Settings.
Configure Accessibility options if you need, if not select Not now.
2. Connecting you to a network
You will then be asked to connect to a network noting the information below.
You will be unable to do the initial sign in to your new device using Eduroam Wi-Fi. Instead you can use one of the following:
The temporary Wi-Fi network UIS-UMD available at various sites across the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
Take the laptop home to setup on your home Wi-Fi.
UniOfCam-Guest Wi-Fi, which will launch the “captive portal” for you to enter your details.
A wired network connection, only available in the CSCS Recovery Clinic.
If you are using the wired network connection, in the CSCS Recovery clinic, move to step 3.
If you are at your desk on one of the various sites on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus or in the CSCS Recovery clinic and not using the wired network connection, and using the Wi-Fi network called UIS-UMD, enter the password you have been given.
The password for “UIS-UMD” Wi-Fi changes, early every Monday morning.
It is important you do not share the password with anyone, under any circumstances, as this Wi-Fi network is for use only to set up your new UMD device.
If you are at home on your home Wi-Fi, then select and enter your home password.
3. Logging in
On the Remote Management screen below, click Continue on the first screen.
Use your @cam.ac.uk credentials for all Microsoft sign-ins even if pre-populated with your primary Medschl email address
Enter your Raven/UIS Office365 account details, using the full University email address (i.e. ab123@cam.ac.uk)
Then enter your Raven/UIS Office365 account password and confirm using the Multi Factor Authentication (MFA/2FA) step.
Next, you will need to set a local password. You can use your Raven/UIS Office365 account password, as long as it meets the complexity requirements below.
Then complete the remaining steps:
Enable Location Services - Yes
Setup Touch ID - Optional
Choose Your Look - Optional
Once you are signed in, please restart the laptop to activate FileVault, see below.
4. Setting up FileVault drive encryption
Disk encryption via FileVault ensures that your files and data on your device remain secure.
On the next log in, you will be prompted to enable FileVault, see below, select Enable Now.
This step cannot be skipped and will run in the background.
5. Setting up Eduroam and VPN access
You must be within range of an Eduroam Wi-Fi network to be able to set it up, so you may need to do this when next on-site. VPN can be set up either remotely or on-site.
Once your device is encrypted, you will now need to setup Eduroam for continued Wi-Fi access and you may also need VPN set up so you can get to more secure systems like CUFs or CHRIS.
With an Internet connection, open a browser window and navigate to https://help.uis.cam.ac.uk/service/wifi/connect-to-eduroam/mac-os-x to configure Eduroam.
In addition, please also navigate to https://help.uis.cam.ac.uk/service/network-services/remote-access/uis-vpn/macos to setup the UIS VPN on the device.
Once connected to Eduroam, please then disconnect and forget the "UIS-UMD" Wi-Fi network.
6. Self Service and installing applications
To install applications, go the Applications folder and open the Self Service application.
The Self-Serve application (circled in red below) allows you to search for and install software and 100’s of applications from the University Company Portal.
Applications may take some time to appear (from a few minutes, up to an hour) as the device will need some time to synchronise with the University systems.
If you find the application you want is missing, you can contact the CSCS Service Desk by logging a ticket, who can then put in a request or help you install it if it’s urgent.
7. Installing and Setting up Outlook, OneDrive and MS Teams
Go to the Self-Serve application and install the Office Suite application.
Go to Finder and search for Outlook and click to open it.
Use your @cam.ac.uk credentials for all Microsoft sign-ins even if pre-populated with your primary Medschl email address
On the sign in screen, enter your Raven/UIS Office365 account details, using the full email address, i.e. ab123@cam.ac.uk then click on Next, then enter your password when prompted
Once you have logged into Outlook, when you open OneDrive and MS Teams applications, it will automatically pick up the login credentials to help you login.
In the event of any problems, please contact the CSCS Service Desk on 01223 336261
