Known Problems

Mac OSX: Sync Client not reliable

The OneDrive application for OSX is currently very unreliable and is not yet recommended or supported by us. We have tested the last major release in the AppStore from April 2016 - when a new update is released we will re-run our tests.

Windows: OneDrive client vs the OneDrive for Business Client

There is a discontinued and legacy sync client, called the OneDrive for Business client that is often included with Office 2013 and Office 2016 (although we disable have disabled it in our standard installations). If this is on your computer, note this has been superseded and should NOT be used. It has severe limitations that could result in data loss and CSCS does not support its use. Since December 2015, the OneDrive for Business service uses the same Microsoft OneDrive client that the Personal service uses for syncing. This new combined client is sometimes referred to as the next-gen OneDrive for Business client.

To ensure you are using the correct client, please follow the instructions below for obtaining it. If you do have "OneDrive for Business" in your start menu, you can simply ignore it, or contact us to remove it for you.

Requirements to Configuring Syncing

  • Office 365 account as provided to University staff and students
  • Admin rights are required to install the client (or you can request the installation from our Service Desk)
  • Internet Connection for syncing
  • Sufficient disk space for files to be synced (OneDrive itself can store up to 1TB, but most computer hard disks are much smaller)
  • On Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 you will need to install the Sync Client
  • On Windows 10 has the client built into it and just needs to be configured.
  • OSX 10.9 or newer is required on Mac devices
