CSCS uses the computer name to connect to it remotely, and to track information about it in our systems.  This article describes how to quickly find the computer name.

How to find a computer name (Hostname or UMD number) Windows 11

Windows

 Instructions for Windows
  • Open the Settings application - Either by going to the Start menu and click the Settings button:

    Or by typing "Settings" into the search and open the Settings application: 

  • Ensure the System tab is selected, which is usually the first item on the left side of the window, and the UMD hostname should be displayed at the top

  • Alternatively if you open up the Company Portal app (should be pinned on the taskbar or you can open it from a Windows search) the select Home it will show the UMD hostname

  • For devices on older versions of Windows or such as Windows 10 and non UMD devices you can open a Command Prompt by typing in CMD into a Windows search, then within the command prompt type: “Hostname” and press enter, which will display the computer name.

macOS

 Instructions for Mac
  • Click the Apple Logo  in the top left corner of the screen and select System Preferences:

    • In the window that appears select Sharing:

  • This will move to a new page, showing the name of your computer.

NB: macoS Ventura Differences

On macOS 13 (aka "Ventura"), the settings are organised slightly differently. Go to Apple logo > System Settings > General > Sharing and scroll until you see your computer name listed under Hostname at the bottom of the settings pane:

How to find a serial number / service tag:

Windows

For a Dell computer, there is usually a sticker on the case which shows the Service Tag, similar to the below pictures.

MacOS

For Apple Mac’s the Serial Number should be printed on the bottom of the device. Otherwise from the Apple Menu in the corner of your screen choose About This Mac, then serial number should be displayed in the details
