Introduction

This guide is to resolve problems connecting to the SLCU_WiFi network. Testing has shown that Windows 7 and Windows 10 clients are caching incorrect settings from the previous network configuration, causing certificate and security errors to occur when connecting to the new network.

Instructions

 Instructions for Windows 10

We have identified a problem when connecting to SLCU_Wi-Fi from a device running Windows 10. If you are experiencing this problem, please try the following steps:

  1. To enter the Settings menu – Either press the windows key on the keyboard or click the windows menu on the bottom left hand side of the screen.
  2. Select the settings menu icon .
  3. Select the Network & Internet from the windows settings menu.
  4. Select Wi-Fi from the left hand side and from the Wi-Fi menu select Manage known networks

  5. If SLCUtest still exists select it and select forget. Do the same for SLCU_Wi-Fi.
  6. Using the arrow at the top left of the window return to the Network & Internet menu.
  7. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click Network and sharing center

  8. Select set up a new connection or network

  9. Then select Manually connect to a wireless network

  10. Enter the details as below. You may also select the tick box to start this connection automatically

  11. If the Wi-Fi network still exists on the system a new pop up message will appear.
  12. Click use the existing network
  13. This should overwrite the existing configuration.
  14. When you next select SLCU_Wi-Fi you will be asked for your SLCU domain log in to start the network connection. You may need to include SLCU before your username, SLCU\user.name

  15. On your first connection you may be shown a warning about checking the wi-fi. This is normal and when in the SLCU building it will be OK to click connect.
 Instructions for Windows 7
  1. Click Start->Control Panel, Select Network and Internet, and then click Network and Sharing Center

  2. Go to the "Network and Sharing Center" and click on "Manage wireless networks" on the left hand side.
  3. Click "Add"
  4. Click "Manually create a network profile"
  5. Under "Network name:" enter SLCU_Wi-Fi and select WPA2-Enterprise under "Security Type:"
  6. Click "Next" and then select "Change connection settings"
  7. Click on the "Security" tab and you should now see this window:

  8. If you now click on settings and deselect the "Validate server certificate" option at the top of the new window, you should now see this:

  9. The last thing to do at this window is to click "Configure.." and deselect the option in the window that opens up. If you now click "OK" on these two windows, you should be back to the same window in step 6
  10. The last change to make  requires clicking on "Advanced Settings" and selecting the "Specify authentication mode" box so the window looks like the following:

  11. You can "OK" the windows that are open and try to connect to "SLCU_Wi-Fi". If prompted for credentials, this will be your standard SLCU user login. Some users may need to put slcu\ before the user name.
