Now that you have your new device, below is a guide on how to get yourself set up.
Please be aware, that software, applications etc.. install in the background, so it’s useful to keep your device connected to the Internet as much as possible, to allow the set up to complete fully.
1. Connecting you to a network
Unbox your device if applicable, and switch it on. If you see a screen prompting for a password for “defaultuser” please restart the laptop otherwise you should see the prompt to connect to the network.
Connect it to a network noting the information below.
You will be unable to do the initial sign in to your new device using Eduroam or UniOfCam-Guest Wi-Fi. Instead you can use one of the following:
The temporary Wi-Fi network UIS-UMD available at various sites across the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
Take the laptop home to setup on your home Wi-Fi.
A wired network connection, only available in the CSCS Recovery Clinic.
If you are using the wired network connection in the CSCS Recovery clinic, move to step 2.
If you are at your desk on one of the various sites on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus or in the CSCS Recovery clinic and not using the wired network connection, select the Wi-Fi network called UIS-UMD as shown below, and enter the password you have been given.
Click on Connect and then click Next.
The password for “UIS-UMD” Wi-Fi changes, early every Monday morning.
It is important you do not share the password with anyone, under any circumstances, as this Wi-Fi network is for use only to set up your new UMD device.
If you are at home on your home Wi-Fi, then select and enter your home password, Connect and click Next.
2. Logging in
Once you’re connected, after a short delay whilst the system checks for any updates, the following screen should load:
Use your @cam.ac.uk credentials for all Microsoft sign-ins. If pre-populated with your primary @medschl.cam.ac.uk email address, change it to your @cam.ac.uk address.
At Sign In, enter your Raven/UIS Office365 account details, using the full University email address (i.e. ab123@cam.ac.uk) then click on Next.
Then enter your Raven/UIS Office365 account password and sign in.
The device will then start to run through some setup steps and install software - this can take up to 30 minutes to complete, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
Once it has completed, you should be signed in to the device and you will then see an application pop-up for the PaperCut Print Deploy Client.
Sign in to the PaperCut Print Deploy Client with your Raven/UIS Office365 account details so that you will be ready for when printers become available again, or if you would prefer to do this later, tick the box “Don’t show me this again”.
3. Verify Your Account
Click on the Search box located at the bottom of the screen/on the toolbar
In the top-right corner of the expanded search box that will appear once clicking on the taskbar search box, you will see something similar to this:
Click on Verify account and you will then be prompted to authenticate your Raven/UIS Office365 account, either through a text, call or through the authenticator application you have set up.
At this point in the set up you should do a restart of the device especially if you are in our CSCS recovery clinic about to set up Eduroam.
4. Setting up Eduroam and VPN access
Once your account has been verified, you will now need to setup Eduroam for continued Wi-Fi access and you may also need VPN set up so you can get to more secure systems like CUFs or CHRIS.
To set up Eduroam, you must be within range of an Eduroam Wi-Fi network. This will need to be on a University site, the VPN connection can be set up either remotely or on-site.
Open a browser and go to the following link for help on setting this up https://help.uis.cam.ac.uk/service/wifi/connect-to-eduroam/windows, please skip steps 1 and 2 as these have been completed above.
If you also intend to use the VPN, please go to https://cscs-itsupport.atlassian.net/wiki/x/PYBoHQ
Once connected to Eduroam, please then disconnect and forget the "UIS-UMD" Wi-Fi network.
5. Company Portal and installing applications
The Company Portal allows you to search for and install software and 100’s of applications from the University.
To install applications, go to the Start Menu or search bar, search for “Company Portal” and click Open. It may take a few minutes to appear.
Initially, you should be prompted to select your department as per the screen below. These are not listed in alphabetical order, scroll down until you find your department. Select and click Done.
If you do NOT see this window, please restart the device and sign in again and leave it for 10 minutes, before trying to launch the Company Portal again. Alternatively, right click on the application icon, select sync this device, open and close it a few times and this may prompt the list to show up.
If you find the application you want is missing, you can contact the CSCS Service Desk by logging a ticket, who can then put in a request or help you install it if it’s urgent.
6. Setting up Outlook, OneDrive and MS Teams
Go to the Start Menu or search bar, search for “Outlook” and click on it.
On the Welcome screen, enter your Raven/UIS Office365 account details, using the full University email address (i.e. ab123@cam.ac.uk) then click on Connect.
Use your @cam.ac.uk credentials for all Microsoft sign-ins. If pre-populated with your primary @medschl.cam.ac.uk email address, change it to your @cam.ac.uk address.
It should auto-sign you in with your @cam.ac.uk address, although you may get prompted to enter your Raven/UIS Office365 password again.
Once you have logged into Outlook, when you open MS Teams, it will automatically pick up the login credentials to help you login.
To configure OneDrive, click on the grey cloud-icon by the clock:
Click on the OneDrive icon, then click on "Sign in".
You may get prompted to enter your Raven/UIS Office365 account details again and click "Sign in" button, then click through the screens, then select Start Backup.
Your “Desktop”, “Documents” and “Pictures” folders will automatically synchronise with OneDrive.
In the event of any problems, please contact the CSCS Service Desk on 01223 336261.
